More White People Like Me

Meet enlightened congressman Virgil Goode of Virginia, who wrote this in a letter to a supporter:

If American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration, there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran. I fear that in the next century we will have many more Muslims in the United States if we do not adopt the strict immigration policies that I believe are necessary.

One of the embarassing things about being an American is that there are so many people like Goode, and so many of them vote. Of course Goode didn’t just vote, he got elected. I seem to remember something from last year about him taking illegal campaign contributions from convicted felon Mitchell Wade. (To be fair, Wade was convicted after giving Goode the money.) I guess Goode is saying that it’s better to elect politicians who take bribes than ones who “demand the use of the Koran.”

What inspired Goode’s remark was the election of America’s first and only Muslim congressman, who will now be sitting in the same room as Goode and voting on the same laws. Keith Ellison is an African-American from Minnesota who converted to Islam when he was 19. He was born here, so the “Virgil Goode position on immigration” (which I think is the Jean-Marie Le Pen position) wouldn’t have kept him out. He seems like a reasonable guy. Here’s a recent interview where he refuses to call Goode a bigot, saying merely, “I don’t know the fellow.”
