Land of the Free

From today’s New York Times:

For the first time in the nation’s history, more than one in 100 American adults is behind bars, according to a new report.

Susan Urahn, director of the Pew Center on the States that produced the report, is quoted in the article:

We aren’t really getting the return in public safety from this level of incarceration. … We tend to be a country in which incarceration is an easy response to crime. Being tough on crime is an easy position to take, particularly if you have the money.

The Washington Post also writes about the report:

With more than 2.3 million people behind bars at the start of 2008, the United States leads the world in both the number and the percentage of residents it incarcerates, leaving even far more populous China a distant second….
Minorities have been hit particularly hard: One in nine black men age 20 to 34 is behind bars.

I remember having read last year a survey asserting that 12 million living American citizen had been in jail for at least a week time.
This is insane, considering that the bailing system (should I say industry?) prevented a much greater number to be added to this number.
For a foreigner, the first impression of great liberty, big spaces, wide array of approved behaviours is quickly contradicted by the easyness with which police put braces to people, judge throw them in cells, etc…
Of course the Patriot Act, which really is a totalitarian law, only accentuates the feeling of humanlessness (weird word, I know;-) of the North-American System

@leblase — There’s no conflict here. We’re free to behave badly, and the police are free to arrest us. So greater freedom equals more people in prison. Doing everything to excess is the American way!
