Americans for Torture

How many people in France, Spain, and Great Britain support a universal ban on torture? 82%. How many people in the U.S. support such a ban? 53%. That puts us in the same league as Egypt (54%), Azerbaijan (54%), Russia (49%) and Iran (43%).

If the question is put another way—should torture be allowed without restriction?—the U.S. once again ranks among the most supportive nations, with 13% in favor. In this case, the only nations more supportive are China (18%), Turkey (18%) and Nigeria (15%).

There is probably no clearer sign of how our respect for human rights has been eroded after eight years of Bush-Cheney and the War on Terror.
