feudal society
Morocco remains a feudal society in which, despite the cosmopolitan surface it shows to the outside world, and despite a certain liberty of expression and freedom of movement, nothing important can happen unless the bosses and barons want it to happen, and they don't want anything to happen that will threaten their position. This sets the tone for a society in which tradition-minded people, the majority, believe that authority has every right to use arbitrary discipline to keep people in line, just as the stick parents use to discipline their children is seen as having come from God.
