girlfriends
I know Hayat, Saloua and Zahra because they are the girlfriends of male friends of mine. Hayat is the sometime lover of Hosni, when she can track him down and he is looking for the reassurance of having a girlfriend. She studies law in Rabat and dreams of one day entering Parliament, where she wants to abolish the monarchy and establish a purely democratic system. Saloua is the companion of Soulaiman, and Zahra of Abdeslam. Saloua is a schoolteacher who always wears the hejab, but she isn't shy about sitting in cafes with her male friends, even when all the other customers are men. Zahra is a dancer who is still in high school, where she is active in the human rights movement. Both Saloua and Zahra are clearly interested in marriage, and have said so many times to their respective boyfriends. They are willing to put up with the tenuous situation of lending themselves to a man without any promise of marriage in return, but only so they might insinuate themselves sufficiently into his life that they will eventually get what they want. The problem is that they have nothing to bargain with, because if they break away they will end up with nothing. Meanwhile, centuries of tradition prevent either of them from spending the night with her man. Although they are in relationships that everyone knows about, if they want private time with their lovers they must limit themselves to stolen afternoons.
