going public We had an idea of what it would be like. Our love, which had been with us always, and had been ours alone, would now be shared among others, strangers, some of whom would oppose us. We would find ourselves forced to shield each other from the blows our love would have to bear. We would be constantly encouraged to deny our love for each other, and the opportunity for betrayal would be great. I wasn't sure my companion understood this.
