sitewide search
overview
You can search Radiant Days by keyword, date range, or content type in any combination. Any item that matches your criteria will be returned, regardless of which zone it is in. When you click one of the links, you will be taken to that individual page, and from there you can use the previous, next, and up arrows to view items in the same zone. Or you can use your browser's Back button to return to the list of search results. The search tool is available at the bottom of each zone listing, as well as in the Information Center where you are now. Your browser will need to accept cookies for you to use this feature.
searching by keyword
To search by keyword, type one or more words or phrases in the text box provided. Typing a single word such as kill will match all pages on the site that contain the word kill. Typing a phrase in double quotes, such as "kill ratio" will match that exact phrase. Use wildcards to match parts of words. For example, kill* will match killer and killjoy as well as kill. *kill will match overkill. ?ill will match any four-letter word ending in -ill, such as kill, bill, or hill. Wildcards also work in the middle of a word, for example, d*ble matches double and debatable.
If you type more than one word, the default is to treat it as an OR search. Items matching either the first or the second word will be returned, and items matching both words will get a higher score. To override this behavior, type + in front of any word you want to require. For example, +apple +orange will return only items matching both words, so you will get fewer results than without the +. +apple orange will return only items matching apple, but items that also match orange will get a higher score. Similarly, type - before any word you want to exclude. Therefore, high -middle low will return all items that contain either high or low, but do NOT contain middle. + and - may also be used with wildcards, such as -*able, or with quoted phrases, such as +"good luck".
AND, OR, and NOT in capital letters will produce the same results as + and -. For example, dog AND cat OR bone NOT bird is the same as +dog +cat bone -bird. However, for the sake of clarity and precision, the + and - method is preferred.
The characters ' (apostrophe), - (hyphen), / (slash), and . (period) are allowed within a word, to permit matches such as wasn't, well-informed, either/or, and eatbees.com. Commas are also allowed, but only within a number. These same characters are ignored at the beginning or end of a word. All other punctuation will be discarded as irrelevant. If you insist on searching for a string with symbols in it, put the string in quotes and a literal match will be performed. However, this isn't likely to return any results.
All searches are case-insensitive, meaning that body, bOdY, and BODY will return the same matches.
Your search string is reprinted twice on the results page, once at the top, and again in the same box where you first typed it. However, the search program has corrected the string to meet its standards. You are shown the string that was actually used, in case it is different from the one you typed. If the search program has modified your string in ways you didn't intend, you have a chance to tinker with it before submitting it again.
date range, content type, and combination searches
Pull-down menus are provided so you can limit your search by date range or content type. For example, if you want to retrieve all the items from 2002, set both the beginning and end dates to the same year. If you want to retrieve all the poetry on the site, set the content type to verse. You may combine a date range search with a content type search, and either or both with a keyword search. Setting the date range to 1995–2001 and the content type to nonfiction will retrieve all nonfiction written between 1995 and 2001. To find all poetry written before 1997 and containing the word rain, type rain in the keyword box, leave the beginning date at its default, set the end date to 1997 and the content type to verse.
In each case, unless you change the defaults, your search will match the widest possible range of results. Using keywords doesn't broaden your search, it narrows it. Likewise, the date range and content type searches are at their broadest by default. So if you want to retrieve all items on the site, simply submit a search with all the parameters at their defaults. This works, although you will be warned first if it is really what you want to do.
