last hours
In a hilly desert town, a small group of friends who had survived the initial holocaust were waiting for the death cloud to arrive in a day or so. As a way of passing their last few hours together, they raced bikes down dangerously steep hillsides between buildings and parked cars. Then they gathered in a room with an old record player to drink, dance and get high. Locked in endless conversation, they tried to be together one last time. One couple who had been getting more and more "into each other" went off to another room to make love. Two young men whose love for each other had been secret, danced together at last. When someone suddenly asked, "Where's Paul?" they realized that no one had seen him for hours. Searching room to room, they found that he had quietly hung himself. The party continued, getting more feverish and strained.
