struggling into consciousness
All science has done is to take the intuitions of our earliest ancestors and draw them out, anchoring them in mountains of recorded observation. Science is the art, if it can be called that, of data accumulation, of finding patterns and directions in data. This materialistic age has forgotten that the essence of personhood is to observe the universe, to come to terms with it in all its majesty, its incomprehensible stretch. Most of us don't do that, or we do it here and there, now and then. I believe that people are waking up, and asking themselves why we behave the way we do, but many of the answers aren't elegant or pretty, or even well informed. It's surprising how little people know about themselves. Nevertheless we are struggling once again, the inhabitants of this planet, into consciousness.
