new techniques
On the way to the corner store the boy got lost. He turned the corner and didn't recognize the streets. He was unable to bring the bread home to his mother as he'd planned. A certain amount of physical attention was necessary, and he'd flunked the test. For example, once in the past he'd put powdered soap in his cereal instead of sugar. He simply didn't pay attention to ordinary things.
In some ways this made life difficult for him. He was never sure of his method, and was always trying new techniques. He was never sure what he would come up with next. As a result his work was wildly unpredictable, and he would try ten things before finding one that worked. People told him he was wasting his time: reliable methods were already known. To which he inevitably replied, "Maybe I'll find something new."
