| Sometimes I think that nearly all Moroccans are traffickers in something. Moreover, they are capable of abusing the values they believe innot to lie, not to steal, not to prostitute oneself, hospitality to strangersin order to win some advantage. There is a sense that the values that apply in the inner circles of family and tribe don't apply in the same way to outsiders. On the whole, Morocco is an aggressively commercial culture, so there seems to be more shame in turning down an opportunity than in violating one's principles. This is a society in which even marriage is seen as a contract, and only secondarily as an attraction between individuals. |
