| Morocco is like a poor, crowded America with the Islamic call to prayer, different music on the jukebox, and the king's face on the money instead of Washington and Lincoln. There is more littering, less tolerance for gays, and marriages are a riotous public event. Neither Americans nor Moroccans have a very accurate view of the world outside their borders, but Moroccans are less grandiose about their ignorance. Moroccan teenagers look at porn in internet cafes, while dignified old men in traditional dress sit in cafes, engage in commerce, or make their way slowly through the streets. Both are young societies, with this difference: Morocco is a society with an overwhelmingly young population held in check by their elders, while America is a society of people of all ages caught up in the romance of being young. |
