I have got to find out what the situation is like in other cultures. I have got to learn languages, assimilate customs, study the rhythm and form of other people’s lives—as demonstrated in music, food, religion, work, learning, architecture, institutions, dance, trade, and so on. I have got to develop a way of seeing that allows me to put on and take off cultures like suits of clothes. Then I have got to return to my own culture and wrestle with it, throwing it into relief against what I have learned, so that I have insight into the source of its cancer, the sickness that makes it a spreader of death. Then I will, in the multiplicity of possibilities open to me, begin to construct and improvise a new culture that encompasses the old ones, while serving as a sort of innoculation against what is wrong with America.
