| I'm convinced that society is getting harder and harder to live in, and this scares me. For the first time in living memory it isn't possible to romanticize the future, and this truth is seeping in on every level. People are becoming shrewish and snappy, and the social fabric is pretty threadbare. Utopian ideologies are defunct. The dream of better living though technology has been milked for all it's worth, and has no more miraculous cures or quick fixes to offer. Education changes little, political action changes little, even art has lost its transformative glow and is engaged with passing the time, staring at its own navel. What to do, what to do? We are entering the time of exclusion, of lifeboats in stormy seas, already full. |
