At the Santa Fe Opera, John saw an older woman he'd been flirting with. "Usually crowds move at random. But she was the vortex—this crowd was swirling around her." He walked up behind her and saw that the back of her dress was a gauzy panel encrusted with pearl. He said, "You have sperm on your back." Turning around, she said, "I'm married." John: "I'm not." They started an affair. She had an act in Vegas and thought he could be a model in Japan, or maybe Italy. His own plan was to become a barefoot doctor, walking down the mountain spine from New Mexico to Peru, collecting herbal lore from the villagers. He'd reach the Andes in 1999, "when the spaceships come."
