Jimmy Carter vs. Israel
Former president Jimmy Carter, still going strong at 82, has stirred up attacks here in the U.S. on his new book, which criticizes the Israeli occupation of Palestine and calls this an “obstacle” to peace in the Middle East. He is being criticized even for the book’s title….

Don’t Litter (a short fable)
During my time in Morocco I noticed a campaign to fight litter, which included hiring people to sweep the streets, ads on TV about cleaning up the beaches, and installation of public wastebaskets on city streets. But that came later.

Evolution in Islam
On November 13, Kenza mentioned in her blog that she’d come across some videos on YouTube of Islamic “religious scholars” instructing men on the correct way to beat their wives according to the Qur’an. She kept viewing one after another as if in a trance, feeling a mix of morbid fascination and seething anger, unable to pull herself away.

Oum Kalthoum!
One of the things I miss most about Morocco is hearing the music of Oum Kalthoum in public places—cafés, long-distance bus rides—so I’d like to share with you one of my favorites, “Esal Rouhak.”

We’re Bombing Iraq
