War Is Theft

Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1953:

    “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.”

Has it gotten any better?

    Only in the sense that we are not now — whatever the overheated rhetoric of the American government — involved in a global conflict on the scale that Eisenhower saw from 1941 to 1945. Otherwise, plus ca change . . .
